UK Customers

As of January 1, 2021, purchasing items from outside the EU may incur customs duties, taxes, and other fees during the Brexit Transition period. These expenses will be the responsibility of the recipient. The courier, An Post, may hold delivery of these items until all applicable taxes and duties are fully paid. An Post will automatically calculate these charges and coordinate with customers to settle any relevant fees.

Crookhaven Art Studio disclaims any liability for additional fees and will not accept returns or issue refunds for goods if these charges remain unpaid. For information regarding taxes and duties related to non-EU countries, please consult your local customs authority.

Returns originating from the UK mainland may be subject to export duties, which must be covered by the customer returning the products.

For UK customers purchasing from EU websites:

The UK is no longer part of the EU customs union or VAT area. Consequently, goods being transported from the Republic of Ireland (EU) to Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) are regarded as imports, thus subject to customs regulations.

Northern Ireland is an exception, as it adheres to certain EU rules under the Northern Ireland Protocol.

2. Potential charges:

When items arrive in the UK from Ireland, you might encounter:

a) Import VAT:

The standard rate of VAT in the UK is 20%, although some goods (such as children's clothing, books, and food) may be exempt or have a reduced rate. Import VAT is based on the total value of the goods, including shipping costs and any customs duty.

b) Customs Duty:

This varies depending on the type and value of the product. There is no customs duty for goods valued under £135, but VAT usually remains applicable. For items over £135, customs duty may apply (rates differ based on the product’s commodity code). For instance, clothing might incur around 12% duty, while electronics often have a 0% rate.

c) Handling/Clearance Fees:

Couriers, such as Royal Mail, DHL, UPS, and FedEx, generally charge a processing fee for collecting customs duties. Royal Mail charges about £8, Parcelforce around £12, and DHL/UPS/FedEx charges between £11 and £15.

3. Payment timelines:

If the Irish seller collects UK VAT at checkout (using the UK’s Import One Stop Shop system, IOSS), goods valued under £135 should be delivered without any additional fees. If VAT is not charged by the seller, UK customs or the courier will require payment of import VAT, any applicable customs duty, and handling fees prior to delivery.

4. Northern Ireland exemption:

When the delivery address is in Northern Ireland, customers typically do not encounter customs fees when purchasing from Ireland (or any EU location), since Northern Ireland remains part of the EU single market for goods.

USA Customers

Please be aware that effective August 29, 2025, all shipments from the EU to the USA will incur customs duties, taxes, and fees, regardless of the item’s value. This key change impacts how your orders are processed and delivered.

All goods sent to the U.S. will be subject to applicable fees, these fees will be paid by the customer, Crookhaven Art Studio is not responsible for these fees.

These duties are calculated at checkout, please note that your order may come with additional duties and taxes at the point of delivery.

Some couriers may have temporarily suspended shipments due to these new regulations.
